Why does my hand go numb at night, and when should I worry about it?

In short

A hand that goes numb at night and wakes you is worth having checked. The most likely cause is carpal tunnel syndrome, which a night brace often helps. Dr. Knight still works it up, with nerve testing when the exam does not settle it, because the same numbness can come from the elbow or the neck.

Why it shows up at night

Let's take a look at what your wrist is doing while you sleep. Many people sleep with their wrists bent, and a bent wrist puts more pressure on the nerve inside the carpal tunnel, which is why the numbness so often wakes people up.1 That is also why a night brace helps: it keeps you from bending the wrist while you sleep.1 Dr. Knight walks through it in What is carpal tunnel syndrome?.

Why it still gets a workup

Being woken by numbness is the point at which Dr. Knight wants to see you. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the likely answer, and a brace that holds the wrist straight at night can help you sleep. The same numbness can also come from the nerve being pinched higher up, at the elbow or in the neck. A nerve conduction study, a test of how well the nerve carries its signal, shows where it is being squeezed and how badly.1 That is what decides the treatment.

Hand numbness checked in Southlake and Plano, Texas

Numbness that wakes you is a reason to book rather than wait. Dr. Knight examines the hand at our Southlake office, open weekdays, or our Plano office, open Tuesdays, and same day appointments are often available at both. Nerve testing is not done in the office; when the exam does not settle where the nerve is pinched, Dr. Knight arranges it and tells you where it is done. When the cause is carpal tunnel, our carpal tunnel page covers what comes next.

In Dr. Knight's words

"If the hand's going numb at night and it's waking you up, then you should be concerned about it. Highly likely it is something simple, like carpal tunnel syndrome, where you can put a brace on and help you sleep at night. But it definitely needs to be worked up, with testing, to see if it's coming from the carpal tunnel or higher up, such as the elbow or maybe even the cervical spine."

Dr. John T. Knight, recorded interview for The Hand and Wrist Institute, 2 November 2026.

What else do patients ask about this?

Does a wrist brace help numbness at night?

For carpal tunnel syndrome it often does. A brace that keeps the wrist straight while you sleep is one of the first things Dr. Knight uses.

Can numbness in the hand come from the neck?

Yes. A nerve pinched in the cervical spine can numb the hand, which is one reason Dr. Knight tests before treating.

Where can I get hand numbness checked near Plano or Frisco?
