We build this site to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at Level AA. Conformance is partial, and this page says which parts are done and which are not. If anything on the site stops you getting what you came for, call us on (817) 382-6789 or use the contact form and we will get you the information another way.
What we build to
We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, published by the World Wide Web Consortium, at Level AA. That is the standard the United States Department of Health and Human Services names in its Section 504 rule at 45 CFR Part 84, and it is the standard we hold new work to.
We describe our conformance as partial. That is a deliberate word. This website carries several hundred pages migrated from our previous site, and while every template has been built to the standard, we have not finished checking every migrated page against it. We would rather tell you that than publish a claim we cannot stand behind.
What is implemented
- Keyboard navigation
- Every menu, tab set, filter and dialog on this site can be operated from the keyboard. The "Where does it hurt?" tabs follow the standard arrow-key pattern, the navigation drawer and the search panel return focus where they took it from, and there is a skip link to the main content at the top of every page.
- Visible focus
- Anything you can reach with the keyboard shows a visible outline when it has focus, and the outline is drawn in a colour that holds its contrast against every background we use.
- Reduced motion
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the animated reveals and transitions on this site do not run. Nothing on the page depends on movement to make sense.
- Video captions and transcripts
- Videos play from YouTube with its caption track where a caption file exists. Where one exists we also publish the transcript as text on the video page, corrected for the anatomy, drug and device names the automatic captions got wrong. No words were changed, added or taken out.
- Colour and contrast
- Body text is dark navy on white or on a light blue tint, and we do not set white text on our light blue. Colour is never the only way we tell you something: anything shown in colour is also labelled in words.
- Text resizing and zoom
- The site is built in relative units, so it reflows when you enlarge the text in your browser or zoom the page. Nothing is fixed at a size that stops it growing.
- Alternative text on images
- Images that carry meaning have alternative text describing what they show. Images that are decoration are marked as decoration so a screen reader passes over them instead of reading a filename.
- Structure a screen reader can follow
- Every page has one main heading, headings that nest in order, landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer, and tables with real header cells rather than bold text.
What is not finished
- Some of our older videos have no caption file on YouTube yet, so they carry neither captions nor a transcript on this site. We are working through them. If you want to know what is in one of those videos, call us and we will tell you.
- Some illustrations migrated from our previous website are small, and a few of the older diagrams have alternative text derived from the heading above them rather than written for the picture. We are rewriting those.
- A small number of documents linked from this site were produced by other organisations and we do not control how accessible they are.
- The appointment booking system and the patient portal are run by other companies on their own websites. We have asked about their accessibility and we do not publish a claim about software we did not build.
How to tell us about a barrier, or ask for help
If any part of this site is hard to use, or you cannot get to something you need, tell us and we will help you directly rather than asking you to wait for a fix.
- Call us on (817) 382-6789 during office hours and say you are calling about the website. We can read you anything on the site, take your details over the phone, and book your appointment for you.
- Use the contact form and tell us the page and what happened. If you can tell us which browser or which assistive technology you were using, it helps us find it faster.
We aim to answer within three business days. If you report a barrier that stops you booking an appointment, tell us on the call and we will book it with you there and then.
