Understanding Common Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Conditions

The hand, wrist, arm, and elbow contain many tendons, ligaments, and bones that facilitate movement and functionality for everything from daily chores to passion projects. These many small joints and bones are prone to injury, even if you don’t participate in high-impact sports or dangerous activities. Prompt treatment is essential to maintain functionality, comfort, and a full range of motion.

Symptoms of hand, wrist, and elbow conditions typically include:

You should see a specialized healthcare provider as soon as possible if you suspect a hand, wrist, or elbow injury. We’re uniquely equipped to address issues with the upper extremities at The Hand and Wrist Institute. Our state-of-the-art surgical center is equipped with the latest technologies to provide outpatient services and solutions for any hand, wrist, or elbow condition.

Hand Conditions

The human hand is complex, comprising 27 bones, over 30 muscles, and more than 100 ligaments and tendons. If you’re concerned you may need a hand operation, we offer expert care at The Hand and Wrist Institute. We can treat hand fractures, tendon injuries, sprained ligaments, joint injuries, nerve injuries, nail infections, burns, and lacerations. Dr. Knight has also managed treatment for many common hand conditions, including arthritis, vascular disorders, hand tumors, trigger finger, boutonniere finger, and more.

Wrist Conditions

The wrist comprises three joints where the radius and ulna bones of the forearm meet the carpus bones. The wrist is susceptible to conditions such as arthritis, fractures, bone dislocation, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. It’s often subject to overuse due to its essential role in daily activities, such as typing and driving. The wrist can also easily suffer impact injuries if you use your outstretched hands to catch yourself from a fall.

The Hand and Wrist Institute doctors and staff can treat any type of wrist condition, including radial tunnel syndrome, Kienbocks disease, ulnar tunnel syndrome, and cartilage and ligament tears. We’re committed to helping you retain your range of motion and achieve a full recovery.

Elbow Conditions

The elbow is a complex construction; it’s made up of three joints where the humerus, radius, and ulna meet. The elbow contains three main arm nerves, two essential artery branches, four main ligaments, the biceps and triceps tendons, and two bony prominences, the lateral epicondyle and medial epicondyle. They require expert care when injured.

Dr. Knight has expertise working with a broad range of elbow conditions, including tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, olecranon bursitis, cubital tunnel syndrome, pronator syndrome, and others. Our team at The Hand and Wrist Institute can address any elbow problem, from fractures to tendonitis.

Common Treatment Options

We first opt for nonsurgical treatments to address hand, wrist, arm, or elbow problems when possible. These may include immobilization, injections for pain and inflammation, and physical therapy.

We can employ several minimally invasive surgical options if nonsurgical treatments are unsuccessful or the condition is too severe for that approach. These procedures use a tiny camera, small precise tools, and small incisions to perform exacting repairs to the hand, wrist, or elbow. Minimally invasive surgical techniques are often effective for repairing torn ligaments, stabilizing fractures, and treating arthritis pain. All our in-office treatments are performed outpatient so you can recover comfortably at home.

In some cases, you may need open surgery. Serious fractures, for example, are often secured with plates, screws, or pins. Aligning the bones and installing these devices requires greater access to the injury site. Joint replacements and reconstructive surgeries also require an open approach.
