Tendinitis
In short
Movement of the arm, wrist, and hand occurs through joints. The driving force comes through a motor unit, which consists of a muscle and tendon. The muscle originates from a bone and then becomes a tendon prior to inserting into another bone.

Movement of the arm, wrist, and hand occurs through joints. The driving force comes through a motor unit consisting of a muscle and tendon. The muscle originates from a bone and then becomes a tendon prior to inserting it into another bone. This motor unit can be irritated with a traumatic event or, more commonly, with repetitive microtrauma leading to pain and inflammation. This can occur at the origin or insertion of the unit or sometimes in between and is frequently referred to as “tendinitis.”
See lateral epicondylitis for an example of this condition and its treatment.
