Does a ganglion cyst show up on an X-ray?

In short

No. A ganglion cyst is filled with fluid, and fluid does not show on an x-ray. An x-ray can still show the joint around it, including arthritis. When Dr. Knight needs to see the cyst itself, he usually orders an MRI to see its exact extent. An ultrasound can also show it.

Why an x-ray misses it

Let's take a look at what each test can see. An x-ray makes a clear picture of bone. A ganglion cyst is a sac of fluid, so on an x-ray it does not show at all. The x-ray is still useful, because it shows related problems in the joint, such as changes from arthritis.1

The tests that do show it

An ultrasound is a quick test that shows a fluid-filled cyst with clear borders.1 An MRI goes further. Dr. Knight usually orders one to see the exact extent of the cyst, and an MRI can also find a hidden cyst that cannot be seen or felt, called an occult ganglion.1 His video What is a ganglion cyst and how is it removed? shows the cyst itself.

Imaging in Southlake and Plano, Texas

X-rays are taken in both of our offices, our Southlake office and our Plano office, and you review them with Dr. Knight in the same visit. An MRI is done at an imaging facility a few blocks from our Southlake office, and the results come back to him. We cover the treatment choices for a ganglion cyst on a separate page.

In Dr. Knight's words

"It does not. Usually we obtain an MRI to see the exact extent of the cyst."

What imaging shows a ganglion cyst?

An ultrasound or an MRI. Dr. Knight usually orders an MRI to see the exact extent of the cyst.

Do I need imaging for every ganglion cyst?

Not always. Imaging is used when the diagnosis is not clear from the examination, for example wrist pain with no obvious lump, or when Dr. Knight needs the exact extent of the cyst.

Can I get an MRI for a ganglion cyst near Southlake, Texas?

Yes. For Dr. Knight's patients, MRI is done at an imaging facility a few blocks from our Southlake office, and the results come back to him.
